Herbs - the basic of modern medicine
More than 5000 years ago the humans began using plants as shrubs and herbs for spicery or medicine. The old first writings from Egypt and China describes herbs, like the Turkey rhubarb, which up to now has reputation of being medical significant. During all those millenniums the herbalism methods has had great cultural climaxes but also its down hill devaluations. In the Middle Ages the herbs were particularly attended with black magic and witchery.
A notorious example of such false teaching is the so-called signature doctrine from the famous nature philosopher and doctor Paracelsus (1493-1541), which teached that 'equal cures equal' which as an example means if a plant had kidney formed leaves it was a sure sign of its capacity of curing kidney diseases - or walnuts, because of their brain shaped shells had powers to cure head aches, etc. This doctrine has shown persistent existence and may even be heard today.
The herbalism is not at the end of a long historic event, but on the contrary inaugurating a new promising era. This is been possible because of new technical laboratory skills as chromatography, photometry, etc., and above all, an increased health consciousness by the public. Many of the traditional medical plants have shown not to persist a thoroughly made inspection, mainly of two reasons
- the isolated biochemical compounds were powerless, or,
- the isolated biochemical compounds were injurious to health, as by the lungwort.
On the other hand are there is been found a long list of powerful plants, not discovered before, as for hay-fever and cold, etc., after having isolated contentions of great medical value in some plants. By now it is presumed to be more than 400.000 different plants on earth. Only about 10% is thoroughly investigated. Obviously here may be hidden big reserves as well as challenges with expectation to find new and better biologically powerful substances.
The herbalism medicine builds on chemical compounds exactly like synthetically produced medical remedies. One of the advantages by using herb medicines is that the use almost always is some sort of a combination preparation, which is composed of certain contents complementing each other. This fact harmonizes the effects and makes the preparation friendlier.
The English texts has some culture historical and geographic contents, and describes domestically use as well. However, the plants are also described from pharmaceutical points of view, where the plants are regarded as producers of certain chemical substances with impact on the human body, like what is done in the Norwegian and German texts.
Phyto therapy (or herbalism treatment) is the use of medicaments based on vegetable substances, but is not an antagonism to chemotherapy. Both rely on the same principles of effective mechanisms. Modern phyto therapy is free from philosophical aspects and must purely be judged from a scientific point of view. One have to distinguish between anthroposophy and homoeopathy, even though the basic contentions many times are like.
